Oil free Diaphragm vacuum pumps are using a crankshaft-driven connecting rod to move the diaphragm up and down. The space between the head cover and the diaphragm is varying in volume to be able to suck and compress the air in this pumping area. Diaphragm pumps require inlet and outlet valves to displace the gas. The space between the outlet valve and the suction chamber results in only a limited compression ratio to achieve an ultimate pressure of approximately 70 mbar. Connecting multiple pumping stages in series can reduce ultimate pressure to 0.5 mbar.
